Topic 11: Internet in vietnam TOPIC 11: USEFUL & HARMFUL FEATURES OF INTERNET THE DEVELOPMENT OF APPLICATION SOFTWARE The Internet has a relatively brief history in Vietnam, stretching back little more than a decade (year 2000), but the growth of Internet technologies within the country over that time has been impressive. Topic 12: Vietnam reality tv shows TOPIC 12: VIETNAM REALITY TV SHOWS What are reality TV shows? Reality television is a genre of television programming that presents unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and usually features ordinary people instead of professional actors, sometimes in a contest or other situation where a prize is awarded. Programs in the reality television category are commonly called reality shows and often are produced in a television series. Reality TV shows boom in Vietnam This is the time of reality shows in Vietnam. Most of them are world famous programs brought to Vietnam by media firms and TV broadcasters as Dancing With the Stars, The perfect couple (Just The Two Of Us), Singing with the stars, Vietnam’s Got Talent, Vietnam’s Next Top Model, Vietnam Idol, Clash of the choirs, Ironchef, Masterchef, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, The Voice of Viet Nam are among reality shows on the national television system Vietnam Television (or VTV3). However, when these reality shows are brought to Vietnam, their quality is not assured. Hence it is a challenge for producers to keep the audience watching their shows for a long time. The effect (or impact) of Reality TV shows The effects of reality TV are quite diverse. It has an impact on the viewers in many ways. There are various reasons why reality television has such effects upon viewers. Besides, the effects are not limited to viewers, participants also can be affected in many ways through this medium. Effect on Viewers Viewers of reality television who are addicted to these daily programs often get deeply involved into any situation. Often, certain reality television shows are based on topics that have no thought process or concepts. The audience thus gets hooked on to TV shows, which do not really have any intelligent concept. For example, these shows often highlights constant fights or disagreements between a group and even telecasts certain moments not suitable for viewing for a family audience. However, some shows may even show positive things, which viewers can learn and apply in their daily life. For example, a person can learn about teamwork or be motivated in life to achieve their goals or even chase a dream. Effects on Participants Reality television can be addictive and this is something the audience already knows. Even participants or contestants who finally get the 'lucky break' also face many effects of reality TV. The positive thing about such shows is that contestants get a chance to voice their opinions and showcase their talent, which depends upon the theme of the show. These otherwise ordinary people now live a life that is watched by people around the world. While some enjoy celebrity status, others fade into oblivion. Instant success upon winning a reality television show gives talented people a much-needed break. But instant success is a thing, not everybody can deal with. While some cash on to this success as they believe in making hay while the sun shines, others allow success to inflate their egos. Participants that only bask in the glory of their success and allow it to impact them negatively often indulge in outrageous behavior in public and even break laws. Sometimes, certain participants who do not achieve success even tend to go towards depression. The reality about reality television is something far different as compared to what may be seen on TV. Snippets from the grapevine reveal a different story. There are many other gimmicks that are used to capture an audience. It is believed certain scenes are staged and rehearsed and presented as 'reality' for the viewers after editing. So, what is the reality behind these shows? This is a question that still remains unanswered... Effects on Audience People who realize the impact of such TV shows believe that these shows are a waste of time. Almost every channel has a reality series on a celebrity's personal struggles or a group of people living and bad-mouthing each other. It is not that all reality TV shows are a waste of time; shows like Ironchef or MasterChef, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, etc. showcase interesting content, which is not offensive. And there are other shows like Vietnam Got Talent which promote reality TV in different manners. People are heavily influenced by both kinds of shows but parents are worried about all the negative traits that some shows highlight as they influence young adults and teens pretty easily. Reality TV mainly airs moments that were considered private at one point in time. Now, everything is public knowledge, and every show goes one step further to demolish the walls of privacy. Viewers watch reality TV contestants at their most vulnerable moments and become voyeurs who feed on their emotions, misery, and problems. Lots of violence, profanity and performing publicity stunts is not always reality. Today, kids are witnessing the harsh realities of life at a very tender age. The truth is, some reality TV shows are a bad influence on young minds. These pure souls are just learning to disassociate reality from fantasy, and reality TV shows distort the differences and make it much more difficult to distinguish between the two. Discussion in class: 1. Do you like watching reality TV shows? Why or why not? 2. Which ones do you enjoy? How often do you watch them? 3. Some people say that reality shows are fake. Do you agree with them? 4. Some people believe that reality TV shows do more harm than good? What is your opinion? 5. What do you think of the scandals concerning reality TV shows in Vietnam? Do you think they are true or is it just an attempt to attract more audiences? 6. Would you like to be a contestant on a show or do you have any plans to participate? 7. Do you know anyone that plans to be a contestant or that you would recommend?

Topic 16: Vietnam teacher's day I/ HISTORY OF TEACHER’S DAY In Vietnam, Teacher's Day is celebrated throughout the country on November 20, and it was established in 1958 by then-President Ho Chi Minh. This holiday, which allows people to express their respect for their teachers, sees students of all ages planning parties and trips for their current and former teachers, along with preparing literature, art, foods, and gifts. And teachers receive visitors at their homes. Every pupil’s first lesson at school is ‘learn manners, then learn knowledge.’ The "manners" refers to the behavior used at home and school. Therefore, pupils are taught early to respect their teachers. Though we have many holidays, Teacher’s Day is particularly special because everyone holds teachers in the utmost of respect. II/ TEACHER’S DAY IN THE RECENT PAST I still remember learning at school ‘first learn manner, then learn knowledge," and I look back upon my school years as some of the best in my life. Although we had around 50 children in one class, our teachers remembered our birthdays, parents' names, home addresses and kept close contact with parents. We used to sing a song in the elementary school: At home, mother is a teacher; at school, teacher is a mother. I studied in a rural school in an area where most people were poor, though very happy. My head teacher used to visit our home often, sometime in the evening. She checked whether my desk was tall enough and whether my reading light was bright enough. Teachers served as second parents, communicating weekly with our parents via ‘contact books’ in which they commented on our behavior and academic progress. We brought these books home to be read and signed. Parents meetings, which were held monthly, served to encourage parents to devote enough time and attention to their kids. Teachers also taught the parents how and what to teach their kids at home to avoid any conflicts or confusion. Additionally, the school system required teachers to spend a few hours weekly outside the classroom tutoring students who required extra assistance and providing more challenging lessons to those who excelled. On Teacher’s Day, we visited our teachers and former teachers and gave them flowers and small handmade gifts. My parents told me that in their day, since November was the season of oranges, Teacher’s Day became known as Orange Giving Day. The school system then did not suffer from corruption as it does today. Most pupils earned the grades they received, making the student-teacher relationship meaningful. III/ CONTEMPORARY TEACHER’S DAY Today, modern technology allows teachers to communicate with parents via emails and phone calls. Another change in the parent-teacher dynamic is that parents now seek preferential treatment for their kids and attempt to buy high scores or altered (fixed) records. Teacher’s Day thus has become an opportunity for parents to win over teachers, particularly with flowers. Many teachers, besides teaching at their assigned schools, offer ‘extra classes’ that provide more advanced levels and more in-depth knowledge to better prepare students for exams. And just like head or main teachers, teachers of ‘extra classes’ often receive money on Teacher’s Day. Regarding money and Teacher’s Day, many wealthier parents give envelops with money and their kids’ names to teachers, along with gifts and flowers. They basically use Teacher’s Day as a way to buy placement for their kids in an aptitude school or university. And it’s not surprising that these wealthy kids often show less respect to teachers than we did in my day.
Topic 17: The most interesting film & film star i like TOPIC 17 THE MOST INTERESTING FILM & FILM STAR I LIKEI watched many films from telefilms to cinemafilms or documentary films; from Hollywood films, Indian films, Vietnamese films, Korean films to Chinese films…but “Journey to the West” (Tay Du Ky) – the most famous Chinese film in 1980s-1990s written by Wu Cheng’en (Ngo Thua An) and directed by Yang Jie (Dong Khiet) is the most interesting film that I had the deepest impression. It belong to Chinese mythology, fantasy & adventure film. When I was a kid to child, the entertainmen industry has not developed and modern as now. Almost families had not own private television although only black and white TV. We watched together at general cultural house of commune. I remembered clearly that all of kids or children at that time were waiting the filmtime of Journey to the West with eagerness as me. I love actor Liu Xiao Ling Tong (Luc Tieu Linh Dong). Liu Xiao Ling Tong is a Chinese actor best known for his role as the Monkey King (Sun Wukong) in the 1986 television series Journey to the West. He got Best Actor Award at the 6th Golden Eagle Awards for Journey to the West in 1998, too. Although there were many new versions of Journey to the West but 1986 TV series version could not be replaced or overcome. And noone can played better than Liu Xiao Ling Tong in hero Sun Wukong. Reason why I like Journey to the West and love actor Liu Xiao Ling Tong? Because Jourey to the West gave me and anothers same my childhood period a lot of profound lessons. After watching the film during summers in childhood period, I read the original novel, english version by Arthur Waley many times. Watching the film I could not understand clearly profound lessons until I had to watch over and over again, read carefully each page of the novel and read the book "Decoding Journey to the West" I can deeply poignantidentity of those things. But there are many instant lessons children can realize in the film: - Every success needs the best endeavours and can not be easily achieved. Although Sun Wukong owns 72 Kabbalahes (Cabbalas) & with the supports of Pigsy (Zhu Bajie), Sandy (Sha Wujing) and White Dragon Horse protected Xuanzang Monk during long journey, 5 of their teacher & students also took up to 14 years and gone through 81 disasters to get their results – become Buddha. - No matter how many difficulties, at the end, the good will triumph over evil. So children shoul do good things. Each character in the story (the film) characterized for specific part of human and social relations. 10 profound life lessons from the film and novel of Journey to the West: Lesson 1: The Mission Is Possible. Monkey, Pigsy, Sandy, White Horse and Xuanzang Monk work their way to the Western Paradise and the Buddhist sutras. Tall mountains, deep rushing rivers, and evil demons lie ahead. They know this is an important mission. After traveling for 14 years and 108,000 miles, Monkey and his friends reach the Western Paradise. Buddha gives them the sacred sutras to take back to China. Never give up if you know your mission is possible!!! Lesson 2: We Have To Be Master Of Mind Sun Wukong – symbolizes “mind”, wit, intellect, courage, perseverance, strength. Monkey’s spirit/mind must be brought under control. One method of this control was the “tight fillet spell” put on him by the Buddha – where a band around his forehead tightens when he doesn’t control his mind. Zen proverb said, “Be master of mind rather than mastered by mind” Lesson3: Learning Throughout Life Xuanzang Monk (Tripitaka) – A kind and passionate monk, very obedient to the rules of Buddhism, strongly opposed to violence and killing, never tempted by worldly desires, gullible, very religious, easily deceived and does not see through the demons’ disguises, shows stupidity and human flaws throughout the journey. We can improve ourselves by learning throughout life. Most important, learning can change your brain at any age. Lesson 4: You Can’t Be Too Greedy Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) – His characters represents human shortcomings, his lustfulness often puts the group in danger, as he is always blinded by the beauty of woman, he is lazy. Falls asleep in crucial moments when other are depending on him. “Those who are greedy and avaricious end up in misery. Because of their evil deeds they are short lived.” Lesson 5: Patience Is The Companion Of Wisdom Sha Wujing (Sandy) – patient service as well as being extremely strong and able to breathe underwater. He is the mediator between Sun Wukong and Pigsy. He teaches us to be patient of what we are doing. “One moment of patience may ward off great disaster. One moment of impatience may ruin a whole life.” Lesson 6: Percept The True Nature Of Reality Buddha - Buddha had arranged for the Monkey King to become Tripitaka’s disciple and escort him, along with two other disciples they later came across. Buddha is often applied by Buddhists not only to Siddhartha but to all who attain his state of mind— a state that is said to bring a perception of the true nature of reality and a release from the need for additional lives. This teaches us to be happy of what we currently have and live frugally. Lesson 7: Take Action By Yourself Guan Yin (The Bodhisattva Guan Yin) is China’s favorite divine being. She hears and helps all those who cry out to her in need. During the journey, she constantly appears to convey important messages or help the group. She teaches us to take action towards our dreams and goals. Those that take action are the ones that see results. Lesson 8: Change Your Habits Change Your Future. Pigsy is an unintelligent and lusty glutton; Sun Wukong is ingenious but overconfident; Sandy is diligent but conservative; Xuanzang is kind-hearted but ignorant. This teaches us to turn weaknesses into strengths by replacing the bad habits with the good ones for future success. Lesson 9: Work As A Team The 81 perils of Tang Xuanzang starts from his previous life, to birth, through to the end of his journey of collecting sutras and back home. It was through these perils each individual became stronger and more determined, the whole team became more harmonious and unified, their bonding became stronger that they finally achieved their Mission. This encourages us to have a good teamwork. Teamwork brings success! Lesson 10: Earn Merit For Doing Good Deeds Buddha rewards them for their loyalty and hard work with immortal life and happiness. Xuanzang attains Buddha status and is named Golden Lohan, Sun Wukong attains Buddha status and is named Fighting Buddha, and both Pigsy and Sha Monk are transformed into Lohan. This teaches us to do the right thing and we will get the results (and maybe the rewards) at the end for sure.

You can paint, build or destroy anything you wish and you do not have to ask permission or have your idea rejected. You are your own boss. Traveling If you rent an office space which is even a five minute walk away, you will still have to travel. A home office is in your home and no travelling time is lost, so this means that once you are done with your work you can go home to your loving families in an instant. Cost One of the greatest advantages of working from home is cost efficiency. If you work from home, gas and electric bills along with rental costs will all be minimal. This is because the heating you will have probably been on at home anyway, so to heat a new room in your new office would cost more. Similarly all other costs which exist from an office would be significantly less because of working from home. II/ DISADVANTAGES Noise Usually rented office space will probably be in or close to a business district. Your home will be in a residential area. In a business district you will be pushed to find teenagers playing football, dogs barking and the general sort of noise pollution which you find in some residential areas. This of course depends on where you live, because the description sound like down-town Detroit. People People visit your home and if they have come to your home you will be obliged to sit with them. This may not be a serious problem but it can be and regardless if you are the only person at home then cold callers (on the phone or on your doorstep) will get the best of you. In a rented office, this may not be the case. Family If you have children, then when they come home from school they will probably want to see you and play with you. If you happen to be more productive around that time you will lose out on good work. If you do not have kids, your partner or parents (depending on who you live with) can have distractions of their own. Sometimes it can be difficult for younger freelancers to explain to their parents that being home does not mean that they are free to do chores, but they are working in the same way they would if they had rented office space. Procrastination It is significantly easier to procrastinate at home since all it takes is a walk to the other room to start watching TV. It’s very easy to get distracted with anything. Also, the idea of being at home can make you feel lazy and therefore cause you to procrastinate. Especially since you may be using the same computer which you work on during the day, to socialise on during the night. This will make it easier for you to load up Facebook and waste your life telling people what you ate for breakfast in the morning. Working in an External Office By renting out an office space which is separate from your home, you will have the opposite of what has been discussed above. The advantages of working at home are disadvantages of working from an external office and the disadvantages above are advantages of working in an external office. Working in an external office will demand a demeanor of its own. You ought to feel odd wasting time from an office space or watching a Youtube video. Personally, I feel that it would cause you to work harder and in a more productive manner as the sole use of the space is for work, and work only. Final Point It is possible to work from home in such a way that you remove the above disadvantages and it is possible to work from an external office and manage to turn the advantages into disadvantages. This depends on the type of person.
