Stanford lands are home to many Are Coyotes Dangerous? , as well as other wildlife. While the sight of a wild animal may cause alarm, Stanford’s conservation experts say that our animal neighbors are generally harmless to humans and that university lands are safe. Still, they recommend caution. There have been only two recorded situations where a human has been killed by coyotes in the U.S. or Canada, according to the Humane Society. Coyotes are, however, very dangerous to pets. Should a coyote become hostile, maintain eye contact and attempt to scare it off. AZ Animals recommends people “shout, wave your hands, and throw objects at the coyote.” It is vital to make the coyote aware neither you nor your pet is going to be easy prey for it.

Are Coyotes Dangerous? a native California species; they’ve been around throughout the Holocene (the last ~11,700 years of the Earth’s history), long before European colonization. They have been able to adapt really well to urban and suburban environments and are very plastic in their needs. For example, they can find food or shelter in open and wild spaces – where you would expect to see them – as well as in developed areas, like Stanford, and in even more urban areas such as the city of San Francisco. The Conservation Program is very active and the university has been conducting conservation activities for decades.

Much of our work focuses on helping to minimize the university’s impact on local biological diversity and conducting work that will actively enhance the area for native biodiversity. This includes wildlife monitoring and land management, such as removing invasive species like stinkwort. In addition to coyotes, our work helps conserve species like California tiger salamanders, Are Coyotes Dangerous? red-legged frogs, steelhead, and other creek-dwelling organisms, as well as the creeks themselves. That said, we don’t specifically have measures that target coyotes for conservation, but many of the actions we conduct benefit local native biodiversity, including coyotes.

Coyotes can be potentially dangerous to humans, especially in certain situations. While coyote attacks on humans are rare, they do occur. In general, coyotes are shy and will avoid humans whenever possible. However, coyotes that have become accustomed to humans, particularly those that people have fed, may lose their fear and become bolder and more aggressive. Coyotes are more likely to attack small pets, such as cats and small dogs than they are to attack humans. If you live in an area with coyotes, it is important to protect your pets, such as keeping them inside or supervised at all times, especially during dawn and dusk when coyotes are most active.

It is also important to be aware of your surroundings when hiking or camping in areas where coyotes are present. If you encounter a coyote, make loud noises, shout, and throw objects at it to scare it away. Do not approach or attempt to feed coyotes. If you believe a coyote is exhibiting aggressive behavior or posing a threat, contact local wildlife authorities for assistance. Click this link here now.
